![]() ![]() So the rails just sit and rot, indefinitely. Sometimes the old rail still functions, but only as a fire break in forests. It would cost money to demolish them, the real estate itself (something like 10 meters on either side of the rail) might become valuable some day, heck, the demand for the train might even come back, making a refurbishment worthwhile. ![]() That's how you get lines that are just completely abandoned when they stop being profitable. Most, if not all, of the railway in the US is privately owned by whoever owns the railroad. It's also important to note that this was never federal land. If I was a federal government I would want to maintain my infrastructure, like railways, ![]()
